Recently we had Brian McGuckin join us as a Diamond Photographer based out of Indianapolis. Brian answered a few of our questions below – learn more about Brian McGuckin Photography:
Tell us a bit about yourself: I’m an educator by trade – photographer by passion! I am married to THE most amazing woman in the world and blessed with four adorable kids that just so happen to LOVE to have their picture taken. I’m addicted to caffeine, travel, and anything with an Apple logo on it!
Why did you choose to become a photographer? I didn’t choose photography – it chose me. I’ve always loved looking at photos and was mesmerized by images in a way I couldn’t describe. When given the chance to play with a camera and share the pictures with others, people started to inquire about hiring me.
How long have you been a photographer? 5 years going on 60. When I desire to learn more about something, I jump into it 10x as much. Since I’ve never taken a photography class, I feel I’ve been blessed with the skills of trial and error. I guess the teacher in me likes homework! =)
How would you classify your style of photography? Photojournalism with a twist of Creativity. I prefer to capture the emotion that I see, but can’t refuse the opportunity to create an amazing image!
Who or what are some of your influences on either a personal or professional level? My grandpa was a wedding photographer 60 years ago, so I believe it’s in my blood! My wife has been an encouragement from the beginning and has given me the confidence to realize my potential. The Lord has opened up many doors for me in my first few years that many photographers never have the opportunity to experience.
Do you have any good wedding stories? Not that I can share. I feel like they are all trapped in the tears and laughter of those days.
What’s your preferred type of camera equipment? I shoot with a Canon camera plus multiple lenses that allow me to be creative.
What would you recommend for a couple just starting their search for a wedding photographer? MEET FACE-TO-FACE!!! Your wedding photographer is going to be there during the most intimate moments. You want to feel comfortable around this person and the best way is to get to know them in person. PHOTOGRAPHY IS A RELATIONSHIP!!!
Any fun personal facts we should know about you? In Wuhan, China, I once took on three elementary age kids in a “bounce ball” race. You’ll have to explore my site to find out the outcome! Here’s a hint… I’m a “dreamer” that likes to “expand”.
Anything else we should know? Although there is TONS of focus on the wedding day (which does help for great images – thank you!) don’t forget about the marriage. One piece of advice I always pass on, which was given to my wife and me on our day, is that whenever you start to “argue” with your spouse, stop and hold their hands first. It’s hard to get upset when you’re holding the same hands that wipe away your tears and show you affection.
