Meet Edwin So Photography

SnapKnot’s list of Hacienda Heights, California photographers has a new addition! We would like to welcome Edwin So Photography!  Edwin specializes in documentary wedding photography, capturing the wedding as it happens! Get a closer look at what inspires Edwin:

1) Tell us a bit about yourself.

I’m a wedding photographer from Hacienda Heights CA. I’ve been shooting weddings since 2005.  My wife and I have been married for over 10 years now and I thank her for being so supportive of my photography.   We have two little daughters, ages 6 and 4, and they are just a bundle of joy to be around with.

2) Why did you choose to become a photographer?

I think I acquired my passion for photography from my Dad who was a photography enthusiast.  He had a lot of cameras in house from point and shoots to SLR’s and would let me and my brother play with them.  I didn’t get seriously into photography until I learned my wife was pregnant with our first daughter. Months later, I bought my first camera, a film SLR Nikon N70.  Later I decided to jump into digital and bought a Nikon D70s and my life as a photographer has never been the same since.

3) How long have you been a photographer?

Going 7 years now.

4) How would you classify your style of photography?

Documentary and fashion inspired.  I like to document weddings as they happen and do not ask people to pose or look at the camera a lot.  Whenever I ask couples to pose, it’s because I am trying to communicate my vision of an image I would like to shoot it’s always an image that’s dramatic and inspiring.

5) Who or what are some of your influences on either a personal or professional level?

I often look around the web for images from fellow professionals and subscribe to wedding and photography magazines to keep myself in tune with trends both in the artistic and technical areas of photography.  I am also a member of the Professional Photographers of America.

6) Do you have any good wedding stories?

Every wedding is unique, but there’s one part of any wedding where I can’t help but feel emotional even though I’m just the guy behind the camera …and that’s the Father and Daughter dance.  During those times I think about my daughters and I get teary eyed.

7) What’s your preferred type of camera equipment?

I used to be a Nikon guy but I switched to Canon because I wanted to incorporate video into my work.  Much to the displeasure of my Nikon buddies of course :) Technology has caught up though, and I wouldn’t hesitate to go back to Nikon anytime.

8) What would you recommend for a couple just starting their search for a wedding photographer?

Always look for a photographer who takes images that you like. I would not start out by looking at prices first as they are usually not a gauge for quality.  Always meet with a photographer before signing up.  Your photographer will be around you capturing one of the most emotional days of your life, the last thing you want is someone you can’t get along with.

9) Any fun personal facts we should know about you?

I am a Decemberists fan.  I got teary eyed watching Bruce Almighty.  I have two tortoises and a tank full of guppies.  I don’t own any Apple product.  I have my own photo-booth :)

Anything else to add about yourself, the wedding industry, photography, brides, grooms, etc?

I’ve been shooting more an more wedding videos and think that I have found a new passion that’s complimentary to my photography.

The industry..

I think the wedding photography industry is getting flooded with newbies and photographer wannabe’s and as technology makes it easier for people to get in the industry, it’s important for brides and groom to be able to distinguish the amateur from the pro.
